Wickham Vineyards scoop gold at top awards

28 July 2010
Wickham Vineyard has put itself firmly on the map as one of the UK’s leading Wine producers after scooping 14 awards and trophies in three of the four most prestigious and influential international wine competitions in 2010; International wine Challenge (IWC), Decanter World Wine Awards and English & Welsh Wine of the Year Competition.
All six Wickham wines entered into the 2010 English and Welsh Wine of the Year competition were medal winners, with two of the ten esteemed trophies going to this hidden Hampshire gem.
The category that stood out most for the judges was the still rosé where six gold medals were awarded to Wickham (compared to none in 2009). The star of the show was Wickham’s NV Row Ash Rosé which was awarded both a gold medal and the revered Berwick Trophy for Best Unchaptalised (no added sugar) wine.
Wickham’s cool climate aromatic wines also triumphed with silver medals being awarded to Wickham’s Vintage Selection Dry, the flagship Vintage Selection Fumé 2009, which also received the McNie Trophy for most outstanding Oaked Wine.
“I am thrilled about Wickham’s success so far in 2010 and just hope that with our hard work and determination we can continue to strengthen our name the UK’s leading still wine producer” commented Wilhelm Mead, Wickham Vineyard Manager.
The awards gained both nationally and internationally are testimony to the fact that in the words of wine expert Jancis Robinson “Fine English wine can be bubble-free” which is the area in which Wickham Vineyards are proving their winemaking prowess.
Interestingly, Wickham’s composed whites seemed to be the international favourites with Wickham’s aromatic Medium scooping silver at the IWC and the 2009 Fumé securing a bronze at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
Wickham Vineyard is going from strength to strength with the acquisition of 14 shops from the demise of Thresher and First Quench Retailing and has further plans to expand with more shops around the local area, the majority located in Hampshire (see Wineshak locations below).
English Wine is one of the unique selling points of the Wineshak chain with the Wickham portfolio leading the range. Wickham’s expert buying team are also looking to list a full range of old and new world lines which are unique in character, brimming with personality and with a price tag to justify the quality of the wine.
“Wineshak’s ethos is to stock wines which are not produced on a mass commercial scale and which reflect the terroir and tradition of the regions in which they are produced. We are looking at long term loyalty and therefore will not compromise on quality” commented Julien Miran, Wickham winemaker.
