The villages of Burley and Holmsley sit towards the south west of The New Forest, in spectacular surroundings and with easy access to the stunning coast.

Burley is a classic New Forest village, largely untouched by time. It’s set in lovely countryside with pretty thatched cottages and with ponies and cattle roaming its streets and lanes.

The village is steeped in history, known for its smuggling heritage, and infamous for its connection to witchcraft. In the 1950s a ‘white’ witch called Sybil Leek lived in the village and wandered the streets in a long black cloak with her pet jackdaw on her shoulder. Even today the shops reflect this history, selling crystals and witchcraft souveneirs.

Holmsley is peaceful and picturesque, sat in ancient woodlands just a few miles from Burley. In the Second World War it was home to Holmsley South Airfield, used by the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces. Though time has softened these historic edges, remnants of its wartime significance still echo through the landscape here.

The White Buck at Burley

The White Buck, part of the Fuller’s group, is a charming country pub in Burley, the perfect place to drink, eat and stay while exploring The New Forest.

The chef and the team use fresh, locally-sourced Hampshire produce to craft a menu which showcases refined pub classics – everything from gourmet sandwiches and fish and chips to sumptuous steaks and comforting roasts.

Dishes from the dinner menu include the likes of: cured beef carpaccio with cucumber salsa; Dorset Blue Vinny with pickled radish and rocket; or trout rillette served with pickled white grapes, dill butter and toasted sourdough. Followed perhaps by: rack of lamb with butternut squash dauphinoise, spiced aubergine, red wine jus and anchovy and caper butter; or a White Buck beefburger with Monterey Jack cheese, London Pride braised onions, burger sauce, rocket, gherkin, tomato, kohlrabi coleslaw and triple-cooked chips. For pudding, maybe: toffee apple crumble tart with vanilla ice cream or chocolate pave with Frangelico chantilly, toasted hazelnuts and chocolate soil.

Their rooms are boutique style and are a great base for a New Forest break.
