The Milbury
In 2023, Clive and Tanith discovered The Milbury and set about transforming the rundown 17th century building into the kind of pub they would like to frequent themselves: that is a modern, beautifully furnished, comfortable space in which to enjoy excellent quality food and drinks, and with a relaxed but professional style of service.
The grade ll listed pub hadn’t been refurbished since the 1980s and needed extensive work before it could open and begin serving food and drink. But all the hard work has been worthwhile and guests can now enjoy the stylish comfort whilst soaking in the lovingly restored original features, including the 250-year-old treadmill that powers the bucket pulley system for the 300ft well. Twice as deep as the height of Winchester Cathedral, the well, which is inside the building near the bar, predates the pub by around 400 years: it was cut by hand over 800 years ago and, remarkably, the candles used by the well diggers are still in place up the sides.
Head Chef Mike Smollett’s menus are led by the seasons, based on the best local ingredients he can lay his hands on, and offer the opportunity for guests to share dishes tapas-style.
