Tranquil and timeless, the historic village of Beaulieu has to be the perfect spot for alternative Christmas shopping. Beaulieu translates as ‘beautiful place’ in French’, and is the perfect backdrop for shopping which is a joy.
Forget the rammed streets of the big cities and instead, take a drive across the New Forest to join ponies and huge-eyed donkeys slowly browsing the village shops in a surreal fashion that can’t help but bring a smile.
Hand-made chocolates
The village dates back to the 13th century, and is owned by the Beaulieu Estate. The historic High Street is home to The Beaulieu Chocolate Studio, where craftsman Trevor Smith hand-makes artisan chocolates worthy of the very best French chocolatiers.
Who wouldn’t love a box of these delights? Choose from around 30 flavours as part of a ‘hand pick your own’ selection. There’s New Forest honey truffle, stem ginger encased in dark chocolate, rum and pineapple truffle and Topaze, a delicious almond and hazelnut praline which is a popular favourite.
If you can’t get out to the Forest, the Forest chocolates can come to you thanks to online options. The Beaulieu Chocolate Studio also creates bespoke hampers which are perfect as gifts.
The Montagu Arms
When you’ve finished with the High Street, head to The Montagu Arms for lunch or afternoon tea to round off your timeless shopping trip.
There’s lots to do on the doorstep and the New Forest is spectacular in the winter, so you could even book an overnight stay.
Traditionally an inn, the hotel has roaring fires, sumptuous sofas and rich oak panelling — it’s a winter weekend dream. Afternoon tea here isn’t to be missed, or perhaps have the G&T version!
