Stockbridge in the Test Valley
The charming town of Stockbridge sits in the picturesque Test Valley and straddles the river which flows through the high street and where you can easily see the trout which the area is famous for.
It actually won Google Street View’s inaugural award for the foodiest high street in Britain and it’s a well-deserved accolade.
The single street is home to an array of delis, restaurants, coffee shops and gastro pubs and is well worth a drive out.
It may be just one street, but working your way from one end to the other requires a serious appetite for fabulous food – and a very loose waistband!

Trout ‘n’ About festival
Stockbridge’s fine food pedigree is celebrated at its popular Trout ‘n’ About festival, held on the first Sunday of August each year.
The historic high street is packed with more than 100 stalls showcasing the best local food, produce and crafts.
There’s the chance to try local water buffalo, venison, game, fudge, cheeses, cider and wine from the Test Valley, and money raised is donated to local charities.




The Greyhound on the Test
The Greyhound on the Test, in the heart of the town, is an exquisite country inn with rooms, sat on the banks of the River Test and with a riverside garden and bar.
Its got a rich history dateing back to the 1800s – its name stems from the to the use of greyhounds to hunt, or course, hares.


Thyme & Tides Deli
Thyme & Tides Deli is a deli and dog-friendly bistro with a sunny courtyard garden – worth a trip in its own right if you’re a foodie.
Here you can choose from dozens of cheeses, local sourdough breads, charcuterie and even gourmet soups.
The fish counter groans with plump scallops, huge tiger prawns, and fat fillets of monkfish and cod. They even have a picnic menu!




The Glass House at Houghton
The Glass House at Houghton, just outside Stockbridge overlooks the famous walled garden of Houghton Lodge Gardens.
It’s a delightful, quirky space which calls itself a team room but it’s so much more. The menu changes regularly and features delicious homemade soups, cakes, daily quiches and a spectacular afternoon tea.
As well as the tea room and gardens, there’s a gift shop, florist and treats from local bakery and Hampshire Fare member, Hoxton Bakehouse.
The Mayfly on the Test
A Fuller’s pub, The Mayfly, sits in a spectacular location on the banks of the River Test near Stockbridge.
It’s an idyllic spot for a summer lunch in the beer garden.
