Winchester is England’s ancient capital, where medieval streets meet a thriving modern food and drink scene in a compact area that’s easy to explore on foot.
Dominated by its soaring cathedral, the city blends heritage, culture and artisan flair. Wander cobbled lanes past ancient buildings, buy fresh, local fare at farm shops and delicatessens and stop for lunch at traditional foodie pubs. The city has a pavement café culture that is as successful as any in the UK – perfect for enjoying slow food and people watching.
Twice a month the city centre hosts a Sunday famers market, and weekly street markets are held with fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, local artisan produce and an array of street foods to try.
This trail focuses on a central Winchester walk to explore all this beautiful city centre has to offer. Arrive by train and spend one day walking the city or book an overnight stay.
There are gastropubs, fine dining restaurants, cafes, tea rooms, street food and international cuisine all just a short walk away.
Rolling countryside, historic estates and the South Downs National Park frame the city – perfect for a longer stay taking in charming towns and villages such as Alresford, Bishop’s Waltham, Wickham and beyond.
