Food and drink in the great outdoors
There’s nothing quite like a cold beer in a pub garden in the heat of summer
There’s nothing quite like a cold beer, a craft cider or an ice cold glass of Hampshire wine in a pub garden, courtyard or terrace in the height of the English summer. Maybe it whisks us back to foreign holidays or to childhood memories of being sat outside a pub with a bottle of coke, a straw and a packet of crisps!
Our patch definitely has its pubs with an iconic reputation for their outdoor space or for their unbelievable views – but we have a plethora of members who would love to welcome you to their great outdoors.
There’s a full list and a map for you to search for a perfect pub destination at the bottom of this post. Before though, here’s just a taster!

Hook
The Mutton at Hazeley Heath
The Mutton at Hazeley Heath is a gem of a country pub with a beer garden that is perfect for summer eating.
Large tables with parasols make the ideal spot to meet with family and friends, and their shepherd’s huts are perfect if the evening may be a little cooler.

Old Portsmouth
The Still & West
The Still & West is a Fuller’s Grade II listed pub right on the waterfront at Old Portsmouth.
The views over Portsmouth Harbour, with it’s warships, dinghies, speedboats, super yachts and ferries coming and going definitely earns it a place as a Hampshire icon.
Swanwick
The Boat House at Swanwick Marina
The Boat House at Swanwick Marina is one of those locations that transports you instantly to the South of France.
The restaurant and bar sit right on the marina and the terraces have been designed to make the most of that view.

Stockbridge
The Greyhound on the Test
Stockbridge is a foodie’s delight and The Greyhound on the Test definitely sits in that category too. This is a pub worth a drive out to.
It also has a lovely riverside beer garden and the team there transforms the space in summer with tipi-style dining, open-air cinema nights, music evenings, and more.

Gosport
Powder Monkey
Powder Monkey, like the Still & West, looks out over Portsmouth Harbour, but it sits on the other side in Gosport in a Grade II listed location in the historic Priddy’s Hard.
Outside there’s a small area with seating, sheltered from sea breezes, where you can enjoy a delicious craft beer brewed just over the road, all while taking in that view! They also serve a full range of craft drinks and ‘bites’.

Tichborne
The Tichborne Arms
The Tichborne Arms sits in the quaint village of Tichborne near Alresford in the South Downs National Park, alongside chocolate box cottages and sweeping views of the downs.
It’s a friendly and relaxed country freehouse with delicious food and the most spectacular garden, recently feature in ‘Garden’, the RHS Magazine
