English wines have well and truly earned their position on the global wine stage and Hampshire, the birthplace of English wine, is now at the forefront of this successful new generation.

The climate and terroir of the county is a perfect blend for complex and elegant wines. The climate is kind to grape production being slightly warmer and drier than the rest of the UK, and the region is protected  from the harshest of coastal winds by the Isle of Wight.

The county’s landscape is underpinned by chalky soils similar to those found in France’s Champagne region.

Chalk allows for free drainage but also retains enough water to keep the vines nourished in dry periods. It also absorbs heat during the day creating a more consistent temperature which helps with the development of acidity and sugar in the fruit and in turn its wine.

This chalk adds distinctive minerality – bringing complexity to the wine while retaining its crisp acidity.

As well as the wines themselves, the producers of Hampshire have stepped up to the mark to ensure the region’s position as a leading destination for wine lovers from across the world.

Local vineyards host tastings, tours and events, and have added restaurants, tasting rooms and a host of other facilities to make this a must-visit location for wine enthusiasts.

Enjoying Hampshire wine is supporting local – and that’s always a good thing! So we’ve included an overview of your Hampshire Fare vineyards here.

Hambledon Vineyard, Southampton

Hambledon, in the South Downs National Park, is the birthplace of English wine, the oldest commercial vineyard in England with its first vines planted in 1952.

Seventy years later, under the guidance of Berry Bros. & Rudd and Symington Family Estates, the team is understandably proud of their rich heritage and now has more than 60 acres of vineyards and a new state-of-the-art winery.

The Hambledon Classic Cuvée is a blend of 70% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Meuinier and 20% Pinot Noir. The estate also produces a flagship Premiere Cuvée.

Geology has played a key role in the success of Hambledon Vineyard. The chalk on which they grow their vines was formed on the seabed of the Paris basin some 65 million years ago. It’s part of the Newhaven Chalk formation and has the same Belemnite content that is found in the best Chardonnay areas of the Côtes des Blancs in Champagne – and is thought to be a key factor in the quality of the wines.

Hambledon regularly opens its doors for tastings, tours and events, and in 2025 launched a restaurant which has spectacular views over the vineyard. It opened to rave reviews so book in advance – it’s very busy!

Hattingley Valley

Hattingley Valley, located in Alresford is a family-owned business that has quickly established itself as one of the UK’s most successful wineries.

Praised for its collection of premium, English, still and sparkling wines, it is recognised for its innovative and dynamic approach to winemaking, led by Head Winemaker Rob MacCulloch MW.

From its birth as a farm diversification project back in 2008, Hattingley has now grown to become one of the leading wineries in the UK, based in rural Hampshire.

Now boasting a 450 tonne, purpose-built, eco-friendly winery, their award-winning English sparkling wines are enjoyed across the UK and in more than 16 countries worldwide.

Serious about winemaking but playful in spirit, Hattingley embraces creativity and innovation, with a touch of the unexpected.

Visitors can enjoy a tour and tasting xxperience, for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at one of the UK’s largest working wineries.

Bluestone Vineyards

On the border between Hampshire and Wiltshire, the Cholderton family farm includes four vineyards, each displaying unique nuances through their terroir, microclimate and vintage.

At the core of everything they do is a thirst for learning, aspiring to make every Cuvée release the best one yet. From the intimate knowledge of every parcel of their vines to state-of-the-art winemaking, and from blending the base wines into the story of each vintage to choosing the ideal release time.

As well as selling their wines on site, Bluestone hosts tours and tastings, you can enjoy drinks and nibbles in their Tasting Room or book a vineyard picnic, afternoon tea or cheese and charcuterie lunch platter.

Candover Brook

Part of the 2,000-acre Preston Farm in Hampshire’s Candover Valley, the Candover Brook vineyard epitomises the conservation-driven ethos of Mark and Julian Sainsbury and their Sainsbury family estate.

The late Lord John Sainsbury began farming the estate in Preston Candover forty years ago. In 2011, he and his sons, Mark and Julian, planted five hectares of vines and Candover Brook NV Brut and NV Rosé are the result of their labours.

The brothers champion regenerative farming practices to enhance soil carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and the preservation of ancient woodlands, achieving carbon neutrality and securing higher tier Countryside Stewardship and LEAF Certification.

Candover Brook is the chalk stream that runs through the valley, home to the rare English white-clawed crayfish, both stream and fish are celebrated in the design of the wine’s label.

B58 Winery in Beaulieu

The B58 Winery is the latest vineyard to join the Hampshire Fare wine family.

Situated in the New Forest National Park, the winery benefits from a wonderful microclimate and a skilled, dedicated and passionate team.

The wines are the brainchild of Sandy Booth who, following decades of successful fruit farming had a dream to apply the same innovative and sustainable growing techniques to grow vines.

After teaming up with Guillaume Lagger, a Swiss oenologist passionate about traditional and low intervention winemaking, they now grow grape varieties which aren’t usually successful in the UK. The B58 team hope to continue to grow more new varieties and push the boundaries of the UK wine market over the years to come.

“I’ve always been passionate about wine, especially the process and the magic that happens to go from vine to bottle,” explains Sandy. “When the opportunity to make wine in an innovative, sustainable and low intervention way appeared, I just had to follow my vision and the Beaulieu 58 Wines were born.”

The media reviews bear testament to his success. You can see the articles as well as read about and buy B58 Wines on their website.

Coates and Seely

In 2008, two old friends Nicholas Coates and Christian Seely, embarked on a quest to one day make a sparkling wine to rival the best in the world.

Their adventure drew them to the ancient chalk downlands of Hampshire, to a secluded valley nestled in the hills, where the chalk soils and south-facing slopes presented the perfect terroir.

They planted vines and began their craft. Today, their sparkling wines are listed in royal palaces, Michelin-starred restaurants and iconic houses around the world and they’ve won gold medals and trophies in all of the leading national and international wine competitions.

Black Chalk Wine, Andover

The Black Chalk Estate is set in 30 acres of rolling Hampshire chalklands in the stunning Test Valley near Andover.

Quob Park Estate

Quob Park Estate, near Wickham, is set in a historic, 180 acre natural clos and includes some of the most beautiful vineyards in Hampshire.

It’s home to the Terry family, as well as a stunning ten-bedroom hotel, restaurant and spa. Nearby at Wickham they also own the Old House Hotel, built in 1707, the last coach house on the London to Portsmouth route.

The first Quob Park Estate vineyards were planted in 2015 with a vision to create premium wines, export wines, and private label wines for selected clients.

The team focuses on viticulture principles that reflect their commitment to winemaking as an expression of terroir.

Working with the best international winemakers, they craft balanced, distinctive sparkling wines in the acclaimed Méthode Traditionnelle using only blends of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier, and following the same process as Champagne’s time-honoured techniques.

Raimes

RAIMES are dedicated to producing the very finest sparkling wines from grapes grown on perfectly situated chalk hills within the South Downs National Park.

Raimes is a fifth generation farming family, a producer with a strong sense of place.

The first 10 acre vineyards planted in 2011 are devoted exclusively to the three classic champagne grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir.

Their single estate, limited edition wines are bottle fermented in the traditional method.

The elegance of their sparkling wine starts to happen on the chalk substratum of the south facing slopes of the vineyard, common to the best vineyards in Champagne

The chalk lends a particular minerality that helps to achieve a delicate balance of ripeness, acidity and berry aroma.

Their grapes are handpicked selecting the ripest and best quality.

They are then taken to the winery and pressed within a few hours, very gently. Wines are made in the traditional method using only grapes grown by the Raimes family. RAIMES has a line-up of tastings, tours and events, many hosted in their Tasting Barn with cheese and charcuterie boards featuring more local specials.

Louis Pommery, England

Louis Pommery England brings the distinguished French heritage of  the Vranken-Pommery Monopole to the flourishing Hampshire wine scene. This is a perfect meeting of tradition, heritage and exploration, led by head winemaker, Will Perkins.

It was the first wine to be sold by a Champagne group under the Louis Pommery England brand in collaboration with local Hampshire wine makers, blending centuries of French winemaking expertise with the unique attributes of the cooler climate of Hampshire.

In 2017 the first vines were planted at the Pommery-owned 40 hectare vineyard near the historic village of Pinglestone near Alresford, now certified a sustainable wine of Great Britain.

The Pinglestone estate overlooks the South Downs National Park and has the same chalky terroir of many of Champagne’s most iconic cuvées with the classic grapes of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier as the bedrock of the unique, elegant, delicious English sparkling wines.

Danebury Vineyards

Danebury Vineyards is a family owned boutique vineyard on the chalk slopes of Hampshire with a tradition of producing award-winning English sparkling and still white wine.

The vineyard has been producing wine for over two decades – their diligent management of the vines and the perfect location on well-drained flint and chalk soil combine to produce exceptionally well balanced, fruity, mineral-lead wines, poured at top establishments in Hampshire and London.

They produce ‘Cossack’ vintage sparkling English wine and 3 dry white wines, ‘Madeleine Angevine’ and ‘Schonburger’, and a blended ‘Reserve’ wine made in exceptional years – all international award-winners.

The Grange

The Grange is a boutique producer of award-winning English sparkling and still wines from grapes grown in vineyards just six miles east of Winchester.

A family of four siblings planted the vines in 2011 with a dream to create wines that perfectly expressed the unique climate and chalky terrain of the rolling Hampshire downland that has been in their family for five generations. Each wine is testament to the skill of the growers and makers.

The Grange’s wider estate has a colourful history – encompassing a royal tenant, a succession of banking families, requisition during the 2nd World War and, earlier this century, the addition of a 570-seat theatre used for an annual opera festival. Now established at the forefront of the burgeoning English wine landscape, The Grange offers vineyard & winery tours, a bottle shop and events throughout the year.

Goodworth Clatford Vineyard, Andover

Goodworth Clatford is a small, family vineyard that sits between the church in the ancient Hampshire village of the same name and the River Anton in the Test Valley, renowned for its chalk streams, amazing trout and the very best English sparkling wines.

In 2016 Mark and Cecilia Haszlakiewicz, longstanding residents of the village, planted a one acre vineyard in their old paddock with 1325 vines – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

The first harvest was in 2018, and in 2021, the first vintage of Goodworth 2018 Classic Blend was launched and became a medal winner.

This is now a lovingly nurtured vineyard that produces a refreshing sparkling wine that delivers notes of “grapefruit, green apple and pear on the nose, interlaced with subtle hints of blossom and sourdough.”
